FT902 Immersion Cooler for our Capillary Viscometers.
The sun is shining, holidays are calling, and temperatures are rising. That can only mean one thing: summer is here. And while the sun turns up the heat, we turn things down.
No ice cream in our lab — but things are still getting seriously cool. While it keeps warming up outside, we are busy cooling, tempering, and measuring inside. Joining the team just in time for the season is the FT902 immersion cooler from JULABO GmbH. With temperatures down to -90°C, it could probably handle a scoop or two — but that is not quite what we had in mind.

We were very pleased to have the opportunity to take this powerful low-temperature thermostat with immersion probe for a closer look beforehand, thanks to a free loan from JULABO. This allowed us to gain first-hand experience with the system directly in our daily lab work. After a successful test phase, the decision was an easy one: the FT902 is an excellent fit for our laboratory setup and will now remain with us permanently.
Precise temperature control is a key factor in many of our investigations involving fluids — whether for viscosity measurements, thermal analyses, or customer-specific test setups. Especially at low temperatures, a reliable and precise temperature control system quickly proves its value.
In our case, the main objective was to expand our capacities in the field of viscosity analysis. Some measuring setups come with very specific requirements. While many of our measuring cells and instruments fit easily into standard holders or similar setups, the exact determination of kinematic viscosity requires somewhat less handy capillary viscometers. These long, delicate glass tubes need plenty of space in immersion baths and can only be temperature-controlled evenly and precisely using liquid heat-transfer media. However, this is exactly where low-temperature investigations become particularly relevant, as viscosity is highly temperature-dependent and increases exponentially as temperatures decrease.

With the FT902, existing baths can be temperature-controlled flexibly and efficiently. Thanks to the external temperature sensor, precise control directly within the setup is possible — a major advantage when standard solutions reach their limits or long-serving systems are ready for a well-deserved upgrade.
As expected, the JULABO immersion cooler convinced us completely in practice: straightforward support, reliable performance, and German engineering exactly as you would hope for. The unit has now officially moved in and has already proven itself in daily laboratory operation. The low-temperature thermostat will therefore stay exactly where it has already settled in so well: right among our other systems, helping us achieve accurate measurement results and stable test conditions.
At this point, we would like to send a heartfelt thank-you and warm greetings to the sunny south of Germany. Many thanks to JULABO for the uncomplicated support, the trust, and the continued excellent cooperation. Partnerships like this do not only make technical sense — they are also a real pleasure.
With JULABO as Experts in Cooling at our side, we are looking forward to many more degrees less in the lab when it is getting a few degrees more outside.
Could we make ice cream with it? Probably.
Will we? Not officially. Not yet…
